Celebrations in honor of fathers, father-figures, and fatherhood happen all around the world at different times of the year. In the United States, we set aside the third Sunday of each June to spend a day appreciating, loving, and pampering our dads.
The holiday began as a local observance in Fairmont, West Virginia in 1908, just two months after the first Mother’s Day was celebrated in a nearby town. Two years later, the citizens of Spokane, Washington embraced the new tradition by holding a celebration of their own to recognize all fathers.
Soon after, Father’s Day celebrations arose across the United States. It was not until 1966, however, that the holiday would receive any official recognition from the United States government, when Lyndon B. Johnson issued a presidential proclamation urging everyone to participate. In 1972, President Richard Nixon officially recognized Father’s Day as a federal holiday.
