Any grandparent or grandchild will say that there is no relationship quite as unique or special as the bond between grandparents and their grandchildren. Show your grandparents or elderly friend how much you appreciate them this Grandparents Day, September 13, 2015, with fun activities, parties, and gifts.
Marian McQuade, a housewife from Oak Hill, West Virginia, is credited with founding Grandparents Day. Marian dedicated her time to advocating for senior citizens living in nursing homes and educating youth about the contributions the elderly had made to society throughout history. She encouraged young people to spend time with their grandparents and the elderly in order to learn from their many years of wisdom. McQuade brought the idea to her state senator, and, in 1973, Senator Jennings Randolph introduced a resolution to make Grandparents Day a national holiday. Five years later, President Jimmy Carter signed a proclamation which officially recognized Grandparents Day as a national holiday to be celebrated annually on the first Sunday in September after Labor Day. The official purpose of the holiday is, of course, to honor grandparents, to present grandparents an opportunity to show their love for their children’s children, and to help children learn the strength, wealth of information, and experience-based guidance the elderly can offer.
